If you are a published children’s author who would like to work in schools here’s a course to help you get started.
The Primary English Teaching Association in partnership with CAL (Copyright Agency Ltd) is running a training program for new authors who are interested in working in schools as a way of supporting teachers to promote an interest in reading and writing and develop the skills of their students.
The program which will be run in Sydney will involve 3 days of workshops, information sharing and practical experience.
Tuesday 26 February: Introductory workshops on working in schools and planning and presenting sessions.
First week April – one day practicum working in a school mentored by an experienced children’s author (date to be confirmed).
Tuesday 8 April: Practicum follow-up and ideas for presenting online workshops and videoconferencing.
Participants are required to attend all three days.
Sessions will be presented by experienced teachers and authors including Maureen Nicol, former Teacher Librarian at Dubbo School of Distance Education, Val Noake, Project Manager PETA and authors Deb Abela and James Roy. More details of the program will be available in January.
An e-manual to assist new authors in developing their presentations for primary school students and guidelines for teachers wishing to engage authors for their school will be developed. These will be available on the Peta website at the end of the program.
The training program is free and open to authors with at least one book published or accepted by a publisher. Preference will be given to authors writing for primary aged students. Places are limited. Interested authors should return the Expression of Interest form by 25 January 2008.
